Toledo Reaches Main Draw Semifinal

NORMAN, Okla. - Minnesota men's tennis senior Leandro Toledo won twice in singles Sunday to advance to the semifinal round at the ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla. Toledo, the No. 22-ranked player in the country, was one of three Gophers to reach the tournament's quarterfinal round.
Toledo began the day with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Oklahoma's Nick Papac before meeting teammate and fellow senior Mathieu Froment in the quarterfinal round. Froment dropped Tulsa's Matthew Kirby in his first match of the day before falling to 2014 All-American Toledo, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Toledo has won all four of his matches in the tournament in straight sets. Froment was Toledo's first opponent to bring a set to a tiebreaker.
Third-seeded Toledo will face Drake's Ben Lott, the tournament's 12th seed, in the semifinal round at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The singles draw champion will receive automatic entry into 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Also reaching the quarterfinal round was senior Jack Hamburg, who dispatched No. 64-ranked Dusty Boyer of Nebraska, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Hamburg was unable to defeat a second ranked opponent on the day, however, as he dropped a three-set decision to No. 3-ranked Axel Alvarez Llamas of host Oklahoma.
Freshmen Felix Corwin and Matic ?pec both lost in the round of 16. Corwin was defeated in three sets by the Sooners' No. 16-ranked Dane Webb, while ?pec was eliminated by Lott, suffering a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) setback. Corwin's loss was the first of his career, leaving his record at 6-1. ?pec is now 5-2.
Both Minnesota doubles tandems to play in the semifinals Sunday were unable to reach Monday's championship match. Toledo and Coewin were beaten, 6-3, 7-5, by Tin Ostojic and Tomislav Gregurovic of Wichita State. The No. 11-ranked duo of Hamburg and Froment was outlasted by No. 40 Alvarez and Webb, 6-3, 6-4.
Following Central Region Championship play for the Gophers will be the Big Ten Indoor Championships Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
