TULSA, Okla. - Three members of the University of Minnesota men's tennis team competed in second-round play at the ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Friday. No. 22-ranked Leandro Toledo advanced to the Round of 16 in singles, while Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment bowed out in the second round of doubles play.
Toledo, who stunned 13th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA in three sets in his first match Thursday, won in straight sets Friday. The Hamburg, Germany native defeated No. 58-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the third round of the tournament. He now had 17-career wins against ranked opponents.
To receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Toledo needs to win his next match and move on to the quarterfinal round.
Toledo's next opponent will be No. 20-ranked junior Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest. Bogaerts went 26-13 as a sophomore for the Demon Deacons after transferring from Mississippi State. He reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament last year and has begun the All-American Championships by taking down and Louisville's Albert Wagner and third-ranked Axel Alvarez Llamas of Oklahoma.
After losing the first round of main-draw play as a sophomore, Toledo qualified for the National Indoors by reaching the championship round of the ITA Central Region Tournament.
The No. 11-ranked duo of Hamburg and Froment fell 6-0, 6-2 to the top-seeded and top-ranked Tennessee tandem of Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese. Libietis and Reese won the NCAA Doubles Tournament last season.
Hamburg and Froment, now 32-14 together, began their season by grinding out a 3-6, 7-6 (19), 1-0 (1) victory over No. 28 Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek of San Diego Thursday.
Following this event, the Gopher pick up play next Thursday at the ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla.
