Gophers Go 7-3 in Big Ten Indoors Doubles

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's tennis team completed doubles play at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center Friday. Doubles teams of Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment, Felix Corwin and Eric Frueh, and Ruben Weber and Matic Spec combined to go 7-3 on the day.
As a team, the Gophers finish the fall season with a combined doubles record of 17-11.
Hamburg and Froment placed third in the A Flight, finishing the day with a 3-1 mark. After receiving a bye in the draw's round of 16, the 11th-ranked duo rallied from an early deficit to down Matt Mendez and Riley Reist, 8-3. They then dropped an 8-6 semifinal decision to Michigan State's Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane, but recovered for an 8-3 victory against Michigan's Tyler Gardiner and Kevin Wong.
Corwin and Frueh defeated Marc Herrmann and Chris Hobgarski Nebraska, 8-4, before being eliminated from the A Flight by Gardiner and Wong. The Minnesota tandem finished the day with consolation triumphs over opponents representing the Cornhuskers and Wisconsin.
In the eight-team B Flight, Weber and Spec dispatched the Badgers' Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov and Michigan State's Alexander Kim and Doug Zade before falling in the championship to the Spartans' Michael Dube and Mac Roy in a tiebreaker.
Singles play at the tournament will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Frueh, Froment, Weber, Corwin, Spec, and sophomore Jeremy Lynn will represent the Maroon and Gold in the 50-player draw. Play will run from Saturday through Monday. Corwin, Spec, Weber, and Froment are the bracket's second, third, seventh, and eighth seeded, respectively, and will receive first-round byes.
Following Big Ten Indoor Championships play, No. 22-ranked senior Leandro Toledo will conclude the fall season for Minnesota Nov. 7-10 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
