TULSA, Okla. - No. 22-ranked Minnesota men's tennis senior Leandro Toledo lost in the Round of 16 at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Saturday.
Following a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 upset of 13th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA and a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over No. 58 Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech, Toledo fell 6-0, 6-2 against No. 20 Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest.
Coming off an All-American junior campaign that also saw him garner unanimous First Team All-Big Ten honors, Toledo is now 2-1 in his final season. He went 3-3 in fall play last year and finished 2013-14 with a mark of 23-10. His career singles record stands at 73-33.
Bogaerts, who was the fourth seed at the ITA Men's All-American Championships last year, was the 2013 ITA National Rookie of the Year and has been as high as No. 5 in the ITA National Singles Rankings.
The win for Bogaerts, which came on the heels of an upset victory over third-ranked Axel Alvarez Llamas of Oklahoma, secured his spot at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The Demon Deacon junior later took down No. 17 Nathan Pasha of Georgia in the quarterfinal round.
After losing the first round of main-draw play as a sophomore, Toledo qualified for the National Indoors by reaching the championship round of the ITA Central Region Tournament.
The Gophers pick up play next Thursday at the ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla.
