Gophers Set for Central Region Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – The Minnesota men’s tennis team will compete at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla. this week. The Gophers will compete in both singles and doubles at the event.
Eric Frueh, Tucker Saxon, and Jeremy Lynn will begin the tournament in the 64-player qualifying draw. The final eight players in the qualifying draw will advance to the 64-player main draw, where the remaining six players on the Maroon and Gold’s roster—Leandro Toledo, Ruben Weber, Jack Hamburg, Mathieu Froment, Felix Corwin, and Matic Špec—will begin.
The doubles pairings for the Gophers will be No. 11-ranked Hamburg and Froment, Toledo and Corwin, Frueh and Spec, and Saxon and Lynn. There will be one doubles draw made up of 64 pairings.
After competing at the Penn Invitational and the ITA All-American Championships, Minnesota players have combined for a 14-12 singles record, led by a 4-0 Corwin, and a 2-4 doubles ledger. Toledo (two wins) and Špec have each recorded victories against ranked opponents, while Hamburg and Froment notched a win against No. 28-ranked Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek of San Diego.
The winners of the singles and doubles championships will each receive automatic entry into 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Following Central Region Championship play for the Gophers will be the Big Ten Indoor Championships Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
