Gopher Trio Remains Alive in Qualifiers

NORMAN, Okla. - All three members of the University of Minnesota men's tennis team to compete at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla. went unbeaten Thursday. Senior Eric Frueh, redshirt junior Tucker Saxon, and sophomore Jeremy Lynn all reached the third round of the event's qualifying draw, leaving each player one win away from advancing to the tournament's main draw.
Saxon kicked off the tournament for the Maroon and Gold by dispatching Lovro Curcija of South Dakota State, 6-2, 6-1, to move on to the second round. Both Frueh, the qualifying bracket's third-overall seed, and sixth-seeded Lynn received byes past the first round.
In Round 2, Saxon picked up another straight-set win, this time taking down UMKC's Vinh Pham, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Frueh and Lynn also each came out on top in two sets. Frueh defeated Conner Edwards of UMKC, 6-3, 6-2, while Lynn downed SDSU's Mateus Moreira, 7-5, 6-4.
Friday's third-round matches will begin at 8 a.m. CT. Saxon will take on top-seeded Jan Pehnec of Oral Roberts, while Frueh will face Symon Opieczonek of Southern Illinois-Carbondale and Lynn will clash with UMKC's Andrey Smirnov.
The remaining six Gopher players--Leandro Toledo, Jack Hamburg, Felix Corwin, Ruben Weber, Mathieu Froment, and Matic ?pec--will begin their singles play at the tournament in the main draw. No. 22-ranked Leandro Toledo will be the third seed, while fellow senior Jack Hamburg will be the No. 13 seed and freshman Felix Corwin will be seeded 14th. Weber is expected to make his season debut in the round of 64.
Eight members of Minnesota's team will also play in doubles. No. 11-ranked Hamburg and Froment will play together, as will Toledo and Corwin, Frueh and Spec, and Saxon and Lynn. The second-seeded duo of Hamburg and Froment and the sixth-seeded tandem of Toledo and Corwin will have first-round byes.
Following Central Region Championship play for the Gophers will be the Big Ten Indoor Championships Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Baseline Tennis Center
