Gophers Send Four to Big Ten Round of 16

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's tennis team saw four players reach the singles round of 16 at the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center Saturday. All six Gophers to compete on the day won at least one match. They combined for a 6-2 record.
Senior Eric Frueh dropped the first set of his opening-round match, but rallied to capture a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Michigan State's Alex Kim. Jeremy Lynn also took care of business in his first match, taking down Bradford Zitsch of Nebraska in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7).
In the second round, Frueh fell to top-seeded Cornhusker junior Dusty Boyer in three sets, while Lynn dropped a 6-0, 7-6 (4) decision to MSU's Gijs Linders.
After receiving first-round byes, Felix Corwin, Matic Spec, Ruben Weber, and Mathieu Froment all won to move on to Sunday's round of 16. Action Sunday will begin at 8 a.m. and will include the round of 16, quarterfinals, and consolation draw play. The tournament comes to an end Monday with the semifinals and championship match.
Spec kicked off his singles tournament with a quick, 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Chris Hobgarski of Nebraska. The third-seeded freshman will take on Iowa's Eleftherios Theodorou in the next round. Fellow first-year player Felix Corwin also dropped just three games in his match en route to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Northwestern's Alberto Zanotti. Corwin, the second seed, will meet Alexander Kokorev of Wisconsin Sunday.
Junior Ruben Weber, who entered the draw as the No. 7 seed, downed the Badgers' Darius Mackenzie, 6-2, 6-4, to advance. To reach the quarterfinal round, the Alzey, Germany native must defeat Josh Silverstein of the Hawkeyes. Senior Mathieu Froment, the eighth seed, suffered a 6-3 setback in the first set of his match against Michigan State's Harry Jadun, but stormed back to take a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win. Froment will play Ohio State's Reilly Reist in his next match.
As a team, the Gophers now have a 42-25 record in fall singles play. They finished 17-11 in doubles after the tournament's doubles draws wrapped up Friday.
Following Big Ten Indoor Championships play, No. 22-ranked senior Leandro Toledo will conclude the fall season for Minnesota Nov. 7-10 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
