LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 14 Minnesota women's gymnastics fell to eighth-ranked Nebraska, 196.975-195.900, Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb. The 195.900 score snapped a streak of three consecutive meets with a score of 196 or higher for the Gophers, who were competing for the second time on the road and for the second time in conference action after winning the Big Ten regular-season title a year ago.
The loss dropped the Minnesota to 7-1 on the season with a 1-1 mark in league action.
Nebraska started strong, registering a 49.250 on the vault and a 49.325 on the uneven parallel bars. Emily Wong led the vault with a 9.925 and also won the bars with a 9.950 performance. The Huskers' leader in the all around won earned the meet title, finishing with a 39.525.
Minnesota's top finisher in the vault competition was Kylie Schermann, who placed third with a 9.850. Kayla Slechta's 9.825 tied her for fourth as the Gophers finished with a 48.950 team score.
Two Nebraska gymansts followed Wong on the uneven bars leaderboard, finishing with 9.900 scores. Madie Hanley led the Gophers with a 9.875 as the team went on to put up a 48.900.
The Gophers picked up a win in the balance beam, an event in which Nebraska entered the evening ranked fourth in the nation. Minnesota scored a season-best 49.075 as Gopher All-American Hanna Nordquist racked up a 9.875 to tie the Huskers' Jennifer Lauer for first place. Jessie DeZiel of Nebraska came in third, but Rachel Haines, Schermann, and Dusti Russell each scored a 9.800 or higher to lift the Maroon and Gold.
Wong, the second-ranked all-around gymnast in the nation, scored a 9.950 to claim her third event win of the night on the floor. Schermann led the Gophers and tied for third with a 9.85 performance.
Competition picks up for Minnesota Feb. 7 with a road meet against No. 21 Ohio State
