COLUMBUS - The No. 15 Minnesota women's gymnastics team got back on track after dropping its first dual meet decision a week ago, taking down No. 21 Ohio State, 196.025-195.900 at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio Friday night. The Gophers are now 8-1 overall with a 2-1 mark in Big Ten competition and scored above a 196.000 for the fourth time in their last five meets.
The night began with Minnesota on the uneven parallel bars, where it received a 48.775, its lowest score of the evening. Victoria Aepli of OSU won the event with a 9.875 and she was followed by five gymnasts who scored a 9.825, including the Gophers' Jenny Covers, Bailie Holst, and Kayla Slechta.
On vault, Minnesota narrowed the gap with an event win, registering a 49.075. Lindsay Mable led the way for the Gophers and tied Ohio State's Melanie Shaffer for first place with a 9.900. Slechta and Covers also finished with scores of 9.800 or better.
The third rotation gave the Maroon and Gold the lead, as the sixth-ranked floor exercise unit in the nation posted a 49.300 and had four of the top-five performers. Mable placed second on the event with a 9.925, and was accompanied by 9.875 scores by Slechta and Kylie Schermann, while Justine Cherwink scored a 9.85 in her season debut.
Ohio State's Sarah Miller won the balance beam competition as an individual with a 9.900, but Schermann (9.825), Mable (9.800), and Hanna Nordquist (9.800) helped guide the Gophers to a third event win with a 48.875 score.
Shaffer won the all around with a 39.400 score, edging Mable for the top spot in the meet. The sophomore All-American finished with a 39.175, passing 39 for the fifth time this season. Cierra Tomson finished the night with a 39.025.
Minnesota will return home next Saturday for a meet against another conference foe, Michigan State.
