HOUSTON, Texas - The Golden Gopher women's track and field team opened its 2014 outdoor season with big performances from the throwers and relay teams at the TSU Relays in Houston, Texas, this weekend.

Junior Devin Stanford placed first in both the discus (161-01, 49.11m) and the hammer throw (184-01, 56.10m) to lead the Gophers in Texas.

Behind Stanford, Minnesota picked up six other top-three finishes in the throwing events, including redshirt freshman Angie Guenther taking third in the discus (151-00, 46.03m); redshirt freshman Kailee Kamps placing second in the shot put (47-11.75, 14.62m); and sophomore Becci Osterdyk finishing third in the shot put 47-11.25 (14.61m).

Behind Stanford's first-place showing in the hammer throw, three Gophers earned personal bests. Sophomore Lyndsey Thorpe took second at 178-00 (54.25m), Guenther was seventh (163-10, 49.93m), and Kamps posted a 10th-place throw of 156-07 (47.73m).

The javelin saw freshman Nicolle Murphy post a second-place throw of 147-08 (45.02m) in her collegiate debut, while junior Rachel Melum posted a personal best of 146-06 (44.66m) for third place.

In other field event action, senior Katie Loberg tied for first place in the high jump with a leap of 5-05.75 (1.67m), and junior Nicole Murphey took sixth in the long jump at 17-11.00 (5.46m).

The Gophers' 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams highlighted the running events with a pair of second-place finishes at the TSU Relays. The 4x200m squad of senior Megan Geyen, junior Jessica Waldvogel, redshirt freshman Erin Hawkins and freshman Titania Markland clocked a 1:37.27, while the 4x100m team of Markland, senior Akuoma Omeoga, Waldvogel and Hawkins finished in 46.88.

Hawkins, Waldvogel, Geyen and Markland also teamed up on the sprint medley relay, placing fourth in 4:04.04.

Omeoga placed 10th in the 100-meter dash in 12.51, and sophomore Amanda Beckman (25.66) and redshirt freshman Audra Winter (25.67) placed 20th and 21st, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.

Sophomore Frances Conlin led the Gopher hurdlers with a fourth-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.99, while senior Madison Smith was seventh in 1:05.13. Sophomore Alex Beckman came in sixth in 14.48 in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Winter (15.35) and Amanda Beckman (16.43) also competed in the preliminaries.

The Gophers are off next weekend but return to action at three meets the following weekend. Minnesota expects to send competitors to the South Florida Collegiate (April 3-4), the Stanford Invitational (April 4-5) and the Hamline Opener (April 5).
