Gophers Conclude First Day of Play

PHILADELPHIA - The Minnesota men's tennis team got its 2014-15 season underway Friday in Philadelphia, playing 10 singles matches at the Penn Invitational against players from Monmouth, Penn, and Princeton. The Gophers combined to go 6-4 on the day.
Leading the charge for the Maroon and Gold was freshman Felix Corwin, who went 2-0. Corwin defeated Monmouth's Przemyslaw Filipek 6-4, 6-3 and downed Dan Richardson of Princeton, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
Teammates Matic Spec, Eric Frueh, Jeremy Lynn, and Tucker Saxon each went 1-1 on the day.
Spec, another first-year student-athlete, opened his collegiate career with a straight-set victory over Blaine Willenborg of host Penn before dropping a three-set decision to Princeton's Luke Gamble.
Senior Eric Frueh started the day by topping the Hawks' Luke Adamus 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. He later fell in another three-set decision against Princeton's Mohamed El Tonbari. Fellow senior Tucker Saxon started out with a triumph over Christian Vieira of Monmouth and a loss to the Tigers' Florin Radu.
Jeremy Lynn, the team's lone sophomore, dispatched Monmouth's Bee Kumthonkittikul 6-4, 6-3 before suffering a defeat at the hands of Diego Vives of Princton.
The Gophers will continue play at the Penn Invitational Saturday before wrapping up play at the event Sunday. Seniors Leandro Toledo, Jack Hamburg, and Mathieu Froment will take part in the ITA All-American championships next week.
