Gophers Excel in Singles at Penn Invite

PHILADELPHIA - The Minnesota men's tennis team went 4-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles on the second day of play at the Penn Invitational Saturday. The Gophers are now 10-5 in singles on the weekend. The three doubles matches were the team's first of the season.
Freshman Felix Corwin fought back from a one-set deficit to improve to 3-0 in his young collegiate career, defeating Cornell's Stefan Vinti. After dropping a close, 7-5 first set, the Elm Grove, Wis. native won a second-set tiebreaker before sealing the victory with a 6-4 triumph in the decisive third set.
In doubles, Corwin dropped a 6-3 match alongside Tucker Saxon against the Big Red's Vinti and Colin Sinclair.
Like Corwin, Saxon also came out on top in singles, taking down Cornell's Dylan Brown. The senior improved to 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Also finding success in singles play for the Maroon and Gold were newcomer Matic Spec and senior Eric Frueh. Each player improved to 2-1 on the weekend. Spec won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, against No. 96 Sam Fleck while Frueh outlasted the Big Red's Sinclair in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Spec and Frueh combined to earn Minnesota's lone doubles win, downing Fleck and Kyle Berman of Cornell, 6-3.
Jeremy Lynn fell to 1-2 in singles, falling to Quoc-Daniel Nguyen in three sets. He dropped a 6-3 decision in doubles with Penn's Gabriel Rapoport as his partner.
The Gophers will conclude play at the Penn Invitational Sunday. Seniors Leandro Toledo, Jack Hamburg, and Mathieu Froment will take part in the ITA All-American championships next week.
