TULSA, Okla. - Minnesota men's tennis seniors Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment both fell in the first round of qualifying play at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Hamburg was defeated 7-6 (12), 6-3 by No. 99-ranked Robbie Mudge of North Carolina State, while Froment dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 decision to Dartmouth's Dovydas Sakinis, the 72nd-ranked player in the ITA singles rankings. In singles, the Gophers fell to 1-2 against ranked opponents on the young season. Freshman Matic Spec dispatched Cornell's Sam Fleck 6-0, 6-2 at the Penn Invitational.
As the ITA's 11th-ranked doubles pairing, Froment and Hamburg will complete in the main draw for doubles that begins Thursday. The duo is 31-13 together after going 24-5 as juniors last season. They went 11-2 in tournament play before going 13-3 at the No. 1 position in dual-match action and being named an alternate pairing for the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
Senior Leandro Toledo, the 22nd-ranked player in the nation, will begin main draw singles Thursday. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists, and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Toledo enters his senior year after becoming the Gophers' first ITA All-American since 2002 and earning his third All-Big Ten selection in his third year in Maroon and Gold. He is 71-32 in singles going into the year. As a sophomore, the Hamburg, Germany native reached the ITA National Indoor Championships after making a championship appearance at the ITA Central Region Championships.
