COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite winning three of the four events on Thursday evening, the No. 11-ranked University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team fell to the University of Maryland in the first conference competition of their 2015 campaign. The Terrapins outscored the Gophers, 194.325-193.350, to earn their first-ever league win as members of the Big Ten Conference.

With the conference loss, Minnesota falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league action. This was the first meet on the road for the Gophers.

Both teams had multiple missteps throughout the competition but Maryland prevailed leading the entirety of the meet. The Terrapins tallied a 48.950 to start the competition on vault followed by a 48.850 on the uneven parallel bars. The Maroon and Gold struggled in the first rotation, scoring a 47.750 but continued to improve as the meet progressed.

The vault proved to be Minnesota's best event of the evening as Lindsay Mable led the Gophers with a 9.875 and earned her first event title of the evening. With the help of Jenny Covers and Bailie Holst, the Gophers earned a score of 48.875 on the event. Covers earned a second place finish on the vault tallying a score of 9.850.

In the third rotation, Minnesota narrowed Maryland's lead to just .025 before the Terrapins pulled away in the final rotation. Minnesota's Mable attained the event title on floor by scoring a 9.900 while Covers finished in fifth place with a 9.775.

Junior Hanna Nordquist scored a much-needed 9.875 on the balance beam to bring home the event title but Maryland's lead proved to be too much as the Terrapins sealed the deal by scoring a 49.000 on the floor exercise in the final minutes. Madeline Hanley and Ciara Gardner rounded out the top three for the Gophers scoring 9.725 and 9.600 respectively.

With two event wins, Mable earned the coveted all-around crown with a total score of 38.850. The all-around title marks Mable's second in as many meets. She now has four event titles and two all-around titles in 2015.

The No. 11 Gophers will return to the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 17 to host the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. CT. For tickets, visit mygophersports.com
