RALEIGH, North Carolina - Day one of competition at the Casey Aquatic Center has wrapped up, with both the Gopher men and women trailing the N.C. State Wolfpack. Current men's scoring has N.C. State with 125, and the Gophers with 60. Women's scores has the Wolfpack with 106, and Minnesota with 80. Competition will continue tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. CT and will allow the Gophers to make adjustments and come back full-throttle against a top-tier program.
Both the Gopher men's and women's swim teams started off the meet placing third in their respective 200 free relays. Becca Weiland, Lauren Votava, Blake Zeiger and Danielle Nack put up a time of 1:32.22 in the relay, while the Gopher men (Daryl Turner, Paul Fair, Ian Gordon and Ryan Miksch) posted a time of 1:21.70.
Senior Kiera Janzen finished the women's 1000 free with a time of 9:52.86 for first place. Rookies Brooke Zeiger followed with a time of 10:01.65 for second, and Brooke Lorentzen finished fourth with a time of 10:07.93.
In the men's 1000 free, CJ Smith placed second with a 9:08.50. Junior Logan Redondo finished with a time of 9:24.28 for fifth place, followed by Brandon Hatanaka for seventh place with a 9:36.38.
Jessica Plant took home first in the women's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.27. Teammates Tori Simenec (1:49.45) and Maddie Hoch (1:50.13) followed for third and fourth place.
Freshman Michael Nunan put up the top time for the Gophers in the men's 200 freestyle to take second. Nunan finished with a time of 1:39.59. Ben Bravence picked up fourth in the event with a time of 1:41.40.
Katelyn Holmquist finished fourth in the women's 100 back with a time of 57.04. Freshmen Brooke Zeiger (57.62) and Isabel Wyer (59.35) followed, taking fifth and seventh respectively.
Sophomore Daryl Turner placed third in the men's 100 back, finishing with a time of 48.22. Seniors Chris Johnson (50.12) and Carl Newenhouse (51.42) finished in fifth and seventh place.
Kierra Smith took first in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 1:02.12. Senior Blake Zeiger finished with a 1:05.02 for fourth place. Freshman Rae Bullinger finished seventh with a time of 1:06.35.
Freshman Conner McHugh placed second with a time of 55.92 in the 100 breast. Eric Sande followed taking third with a time of 57.09. Spencer Mattox finished fifth with a 57.53.
Danielle Nack posted a time of 2:02.02 in the women's 200 fly to take third. Seniors Devin Ste. Marie (2:05.23) and Christie Clarke (2:06.52) finished fifth and sixth in the event.
Nick Orf posted a 1:49.85 in the men's 200 fly for third place. Brandon Hatanaka followed for fourth place with a 1:51.39. Viktor Bjoerk (1:52.55) finished sixth.
Senior Becca Weiland finished second in the women's 50 freestyle with a time of 22.92. Heidi Busack (24.09) and Abigail Raatz (24.21) placed sixth and seventh.
In the men's 50 freestyle, Paul Fair finished third with a time of 20.62. Ian Gordon (21.21) and Noah Busch (21.44) finished fifth and sixth.
Freshman Brooke Zeiger placed second in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:02.13. Gophers Tori Simenec (2:02.35) and Jessica Plant (2:04.49) followed for fourth and fifth place.
Sophomore Jakub Maly put up a 1:50.98 in the men's 200 IM to take second. Senior Andrew Hartbarger placed fourth with a time of 1:51.82 and Jon Thielen (1:57.83) sixth.
The relay team of Tori Simenec, Kierra Smith, Becca Weiland and Lauren Votava finished second with a time of 3:40.18 in the women's 400 medley relay. The Gopher women also picked up a fourth place finish in the event.
Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Ryan Miksch posted a time of 3:18.49 in the men's 400 medley relay to take second. The Gophers also took fourth with a time of 3:22.44.
Yu Zhou led the women on the three-meter boards, finishing with a total of 341.47 points for first place. Lexi Tenenbaum followed for second with 338.62 points. Jessica Ramberg placed fourth with 330.75 points.
Matt Barnard took home the gold on the men's one-meter. Barnard finished with a total of 332.70 and was followed by teammates Erik Larsen (320.10) and Dylan Zoe (319.35) for second and third.
