MADISON, Wis. - Minnesota won eight event titles to defeat No. 22 Wisconsin in the inaugural track & field border battle between the two rivals Saturday afternoon. The Gophers won the first-ever dual, 85-77, in Madison, Wis.
Freshman Heta Tuuri (high jump, 1.79m), redshirt senior Katie Murgic (pole vault, 4.05m), senior Jessica Waldvogel (400m, 56.73), redshirt junior Jess Herauf (600m, career-best 1:33.83), redshirt sophomore Erin Hawkins (60m, 7.51; 200m, 24.36), redshirt junior Kaila Urick (3,000m, 9:45.58) and the 4x400m relay team (3:52.12) won events to lead the way for the Maroon & Gold.
Several of the Gopher event champions recorded Minnesota all-time top-10 marks. Both of Hawkins' times were career bests and moved her into sixth among Gophers all-time in both the 60m and 200m dashes. Murgic set an indoor career-best of 4.05m to move into a tie for fifth among all-time Gopher pole vaulters. Herauf's 1:33.83 marked a 600m career-best by over five seconds as well.
The Gophers also secured seven runner-up finishes against the Badgers, including freshman Emma Spagnola's second-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Spagnola set a new Minnesota program record, clocking a time of 8.57 seconds and bettering the mark of 8.58 set by Dawn Solberg in 2007.
Two Gopher throwers recorded career-best marks en route to runner-up finishes in their respective events. Redshirt senior Devin Stanford was second in the weight throw with a career-best throw of 20.61m on her final attempt, and freshman Agnes Esser recorded a career-best in the shot put. She took second at 15.21m and moved into 10th among all-time Gopher throwers.
Other runner-up showings by the Gophers included redshirt junior Cami Gilson in the pole vault (4.00m), redshirt junior Kelly Flynn in the triple jump (career-best 11.05m), redshirt junior Becca Dyson in the mile (4:49.12) and redshirt sophomore Kat Keller in the 400m (57.80).
Both teams' top two finishers in each event scored points in the team standings. Each event was limited to four individuals from each school, and each program ran one relay team.
The Gophers return to action at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse to host the annual Jack Johnson Classic next weekend. The two-day meet kicks off Friday, Jan. 30 and concludes Saturday, Jan. 31.
