AUSTIN, Texas - The 49th-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team defeated No. 42 Michigan Sunday to close out ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. The match was not a Big Ten conference contest. The victory was the third all-time for the Maroon and Gold and the ITA Kick-Off and was their second in as many years.

The triumph moved the Gophers' 2015 record to 3-1--it was their first win over a ranked opponent and was their 30th win all-time against the Wolverines.

The Gophers gained the early lead by winning the doubles competition. Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment got the match started with a 6-3 win against Kevin Wong and Tyler Gardiner at No. 1. The 58th-ranked tandem of Leandro Toledo and Felix Corwin then secured the first point for Minnesota with a victory by the same score at No. 2.

Toledo and Corwin are now 5-1 together and are 2-0 on the spring.

Michigan knotted the score in singles when Davis Crocker defeated Eric Frueh at No. 6, but the Gophers won the final three matches to pick up the win.

No. 107-ranked Matic Spec upped his record to 3-0 in dual-match play and 12-3 overall with a straight-set win at No. 5. Ruben Weber then continued his spring success with a win at No. 3 and Hamburg clinched the team victory by dispatching 100th-ranked Alex Knight at No. 2. Hamburg is now 2-3 against ranked opponents in 2014-15.

No. 17-ranked Toledo and No. 117 Corwin had their singles matches stopped in the third set. Both were leading.

Minnesota's schedule picks up Friday when it plays host to both Green Bay and No. 46 Dartmouth at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers will then host 24th-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday.
