CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 33-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team split two matches at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Gophers dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 19-ranked North Carolina before snapping a three-match losing skid with a 7-0 victory over The Citadel in a neutral-site contest.
The win and loss left Minnesota with an 8-4 record on the season.
North Carolina came out strong on its home court and became the second team to take the doubles point from the Maroon and Gold. At No. 1, Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark defeated No. 41 Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg. Robert Kelly and Oystein Steiro then sealed the point with a win at No. 3.
In singles, No. 30 ranked Leandro Toledo knotted the match by taking down No. 10-ranked Schnur at No. 1. Toledo won the first set, 6-2, before Schnur retired in the second set. UNC responded to Schnur's loss by taking wins at the Nos. 6, 3 and 2 positions to close out the match.
The Gophers got back on track in their second match of the day, starting fast with wins at doubles position Nos. 3 and 1. Mathieu Froment and Ruben Weber teamed up for a 6-0 win at No. 3 and the 48th-ranked tandem of Toledo and Felix Corwin topped Peter Bleach and Nicholas Bradley in the No. 1 slot, 6-2. Toledo and Corwin improved to 10-1 together with a 7-0 mark in the spring.
Minnesota went on to complete the team win when Jeremy Lynn, Toledo, and Matic Spec won in straight sets in flights No. 5, 1 and 2. Lynn upped his spring singles ledger to 3-0, while Spec won in his debut at the second spot.
The Gopher sweep was secured by Eric Frueh at No. 6, Corwin at No. 3 and Froment at No. 4.
After more than a month away from home, Minnesota returns the Baseline Tennis Center next week to play a pair of ranked opponents. The Gophers will play No. 48 Washington Friday and No. 29 Drake Sunday.
