Corwin, Spec Advance to Doubles Championship

The sophomores Felix Corwin and Matic Spec will play in the ITA Region doubles championship match tomorrow.
Overall it has been a strong showing for the Gophers at regionals. After day one there were three players left in singles. The Gopher vs. Gopher matchup between senior Ruben Weber and freshman Marino Alpeza highlighted the second day with Weber coming out on top (6-4, 6-2) to reach the round of 16. Corwin advanced to the round of 16 as well with a (7-5, 6-2 win over Marc Hermann of Nebraska.
Doubles kicked off day two with only one of the three Gophers teams getting past the first round. Weber and Alpeza took a close (8-7 (5) loss to just barley miss getting into the next round.
Spec and Corwin who started seeded sixth mowed through the bracket from the start. They reached the next round via bye then won 8-0 to get into the round of 16. They reached the quarterfinals still barely touched with an 8-2 victory.
Back on the singles side of things Weber won his first set in the round of 16 against seconded seeded Ben Lott of Drake but ended up losing (6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3). Corwin knocked off fourth seeded Marco Micolani out of Arkansas (6-1, 6-3) and defeated the sixth seeded Lucas Gerch (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). Julian Cash out of OSU was the man to finally knock Corwin out in the semifinals.
Spex and Corwin's first tough contest came in the quarterfinal but they found a way to win 8-6 following it up with a (3-6, 6-3 (10-5) win in the semifinals. They will play Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash out of OSU in the championship tomorrow.
