Herauf Wins B1G Pentathlon Title

GENEVA, Ohio - Jess Herauf won the pentathlon with a Big Ten record 4,361 points and three Minnesota program records fell as the Gophers competed in day one of the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championship Friday.

Herauf won three of the five pentathlon events, leading the way in the shot put (13.43m), 800m (2:14.36) and the long jump with a career-best 6.02m to move into fifth among all-time Gophers. She also climbed in Minnesota's all-time ranks with a career-best 8.67 in the 60m hurdles. Herauf's 4,361 points also included a third-place showing in the high jump at 1.71m.

Along with Herauf's record-breaking performance, Kimberly Golding (8.34 seconds) and Emma Spagnola (8.41 seconds) both broke Minnesota's program record in the 60m hurdle preliminary and Erin Hawkins set a new program-best time in the 200m at 24.03 seconds.

Minnesota finished day one in sixth place with 22 points. Wisconsin leads the way with 31 points, and four points separate the second through seventh-place teams: Michigan State (24), Ohio State (24), Indiana (23), Penn State (23), Minnesota (22) and Nebraska (20).

Gophers Score in Pentathlon, Pole Vault on Day One

Including Herauf's Big Ten title, the Gophers collected 16 points in the pentathlon as all four Gophers scored points. Minnesota is the only B1G team to have multiple scoring finishes in the pentathlon.

Alex Beckman recorded career bests in the pentathlon shot put (12.61m), 800m (2:28.97) and high jump (1.68m) en route to a sixth-place finish with 3,663 points.

Audra Winter was seventh with a career-best 3,592 points to move into eighth among all-time Gophers. She had career bests in the shot put (11.69m) and 800m (2:30.97) in her 2015 pentathlon debut as well.

Amanda Beckman rounded out the scoring finishes with 3,538 points for eighth overall. She recorded a career-best 2:28.83 in the 800m, and her highest finish was a sixth-place showing in the long jump at 5.51m.

Gophers Katie Murgic and Cami Gilson finished in a three-way tie for fifth place with Nebraska's Paula Andrie in the pole vault. The trio cleared 3.99m and each earned three points in the team standings.

Four Gophers Advance Past Day One Preliminaries

Kaila Urick (mile), Titania Markland (600m), Lauren Domski (600m), Spagnola (60m hurdles) and Golding (60m hurdles) all qualified for Saturday's finals in their respective events.

Urick ran a 4:45.28 to finish ninth in the preliminary heat of the mile. She also moved into ninth place among all-time Gopher milers with her career-best performance.

Markland and Domski each used career-best times to advance past Friday's 600m preliminary. Markland posted the fastest preliminary time and moved into third among all-time Gophers 600m runners with a time of 1:30.34. Meanwhile, Domski was ninth in the 600m prelim in a career-best 1:31.44 to move into fifth among all-time Gophers.

Golding and Spagnola both improved on Minnesota's program record in the 60m hurdles. Golding finished fourth in a school-record 8.34 seconds, and Spagnola was eighth in 8.41 for the second-best time ever by a Gopher.

In total, 12 Gophers recorded career-best marks in the preliminary events, including Hawkins' 200m program record. Hawkins finished 13th in the B1G in a Gopher record 24.03 seconds.

Friday's event finals on the track included the 3,000m, where Becca Dyson placed 12th and Jamie Piepenburg was 16th, and the distance medley relay, where the Gophers' team of Ally McSherry, Kat Keller, Stacey Swatek and Urick was ninth. In the field event finals, Spagnola placed 10th in the long jump with a personal best of 5.79m, and the shot put final saw Agnes Esser lead the way for Minnesota in 11th with a throw of 14.13m.

Another record-breaking performance sawJessica Waldvogel move into seventh all-time in the 400m at 55.09 seconds for 10th place in the preliminary.

The 2015 Big Ten Championship continues Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Gophers look to improve on their fourth-place showing at the B1G indoor meet a year ago, and action gets underway at 9 a.m. CT.
