Gophers Win Three Titles at Holst Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Gophers recorded 14 career-best marks and Taylor Mikkalson, Kate Shelerud and Heta Tuuri won titles to lead the Minnesota women's track & field team at the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
Mikkalson won the 1,500m in a career-best 4:41.31, leading a charge of four Gophers in the top eight as Tess Wasowicz was third (4:45.08), Hannah Trasser was sixth (season-best 4:49.62) and Megan Bailey was eighth (career-best 4:51.50). Including unattached runners, Minnesota took all eight of the top places in the 1,500m.
Shelerud also took home an individual title, winning the 400m dash in a collegiate best 59.08 seconds, and Tuuri won the high jump with a Holst Invitational meet record leap of 1.68m, which also marked an outdoor career-best mark for the Gopher freshman.
Including the three individual titles, Minnesota took home 10 top-three finishes at the Holst Invitational. Violet Weibel was the runner-up in her 3,000m steeple chase debut (12:00.28), and Caitlin Dillon was third in 12:10.06.
Allie Heifort finished second in the hammer throw with a career-best throw of 48.33m and took third in the shot put at 12.89m.
Anne Haakenstad was third in the 800m run in a career-best 2:19.08, and Kelly Flynn took third in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.38m.
Three Gophers competing unattached also took home individual titles: Delaney Sinnen (3,000m steeple chase), Kimberly Golding (100m hurdles, 200m dash) and Kiley Sabin (shot put, discus).
The Gopher were also in action at the Virginia Challenge this weekend where Jess Herauf broke the Minnesota program in the heptathlon with 5,912 points. Fellow heptathletes Alex Beckman (5,062 points) and Amanda Beckman (4,879) also recorded career-best marks to rank among Minnesota's all-time top-10 heptathletes.
Next weekend, Minnesota is set to compete at four meets: Hamline Twilight, Drake Relays, UC San Diego Triton Invitational and Macalester Invite.
