Ali Wins 3K as Gophers Grab 11 PRs

IOWA CITY, Iowa (GopherSports.com) -- Obsa Ali won the 3,000 meters and the University of Minnesota men's track & field program claimed 11 personal records on Saturday night at the University of Iowa's Musco Twilight.
"We had a couple nice performances today that we can build on heading into the championship season," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "Guys are starting to put together some good times and good showings in the field events, and that's what we want to see at this time of year."
The Gophers dominated the 3,000 meters with four of the top nine finishers including unattached freshman Obsa Ali, who won the event with a personal record time of 8:17.79. Adam Zutz crossed the finish line just behind his teammate in second at 8:18.37 for a new personal record while Eric Colvin improved his personal record by 10 seconds to finish fifth at 8:27.44. Matt Welch posted an 8:31.32 to finish ninth.
Nate Roese improved his 400-meter personal record to 47.16 in a runner-up finish on Saturday -- one of three Gophers to finish in the top 10. Mitch Hechsel finished sixth at 48.12 while Goaner Deng came in eighth at 48.41.
The Gophers also put five throwers in the top 10 of the hammer throw competition on Saturday with Gian Ferretti leading the contingency in second at 66.50 meters (218-02.50 ft.). Justin Barber finished fifth with a new personal record of 60.35 meters (198-00.25 ft.) while Sam Elsner also picked up a new personal record at 57.19 meters (187-07.25 ft.) to finish seventh. Mac Riedy (55.72 meters, 182-10.00 ft.) and Viktor Stelter (54.29 meters, 178-01.75 ft.) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
The throwers also posted a pair of top-six performances in the shot put as Mark Jennings came in second at 18.32 meters (60-01.25 ft.) while Luke Johnson hit 17.11 meters (56-01.75 ft.) to finish sixth. Luca Wieland (14.40 meters, 47-03.00 ft.) and Jamie Crum (13.32 meters, 43-08.50 ft.) both added outdoor personal records.
Elsner added an eighth-place finish in the discus at 54.45 meters (178-08.00 ft.) while Luke Johnson came in 10th at 52.89 meters (173-06.50 ft.). Wieland added a personal record at 44.91 meters (147-04.50 ft.).
Jordan Charles clocked a 10.864 to finish second in the 100 meters in a close contest with Nebraska's Davon Clark, who won the race at 10.862. Charles won the 100 meters at the Golden Bear Twilight on Wednesday night -- his first run at the length this season.
Minnesota also picked up a third-place finish from Bradley Johnson in the 800 meters. Johnson clocked a 1:51.58 -- less than a second off the leader -- while Charlie Lawrence also came in third in the 3,000-meter steeple with a new personal record of 9:31.88.
The Maroon & Gold also recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in the high jump as Ryan Lockard came in fourth at 2.06 meters (6-09.00 ft.) for a new outdoor personal record while Nick Bachinski finished sixth at 2.01 meters (6-07.00 ft.).
Rashawn Fountain finished fifth at 52.64 in the 400-meter hurdles -- a seasonal best for the Gopher.
Cole O'Brien paced the Maroon & Gold in the 1,500 meters with a sixth-place finish at 3:54.13 -- his fastest time in the event of the year. Riley Macon finished 10th at 3:57.63 while Brad Woodford came in 14th (3:59.00) and Derek Wiebke came in 16th (4:08.58).
Trevor Yedoni finished eighth in the long jump at 7.04 meters (23-01.25 ft.) while Charles picked up his second top-10 finish of the meet with a 10th-place finish in the triple jump at 13.89 meters (45-07.00 ft.)
