Minnesota men's tennis player Felix Corwin won the US Open Sectional Qualifier in the men's singles division held at Baseline Tennis Center this past weekend to advance to the US Open National Playoffs held Aug. 21-24 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
Corwin, who was 14-1 in singles and 11-2 in doubles at Baseline as a freshman this past season, was competing in the tournament for the first time.
He was the No. 2 seed and started off with a round of 16 win against Alexander Reinke (6-4, 6-1) before beating Jesse Sprinkel 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Corwin did not slow down against fifth-seed Jake Jacoby, as he won 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the finals. There, Corwin took on No. 1 seed and previous national qualifier Tony Larson and prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (5).
The Elm Grove, Wis., native went 28-6 in singles this past year after winning high school state titles in 2013 and 2014.
Corwin will now compete against the 13 other Sectional Qualifier winners across the nation with the winner earning a wild card into the 2015 US Open Qualifying Tournament, which is held from Aug. 25-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
