USTFCCCA Hands Out Academic Honors

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -- NCAA heptathlon champion and All-American Luca Wieland was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and was one of nine Gophers to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the organization announced on Friday.
The University of Minnesota men's track & field team's nine representatives on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team ranked tied for fifth among all NCAA Division I program with Aaron Bartnik, Bryan Bjerk, Jamie Crum, Gian Ferretti, Mark Jennings, Ryan Lockard, Derek Wiebke, Luca Wieland and Adam Zutz earning honors.
Wieland, who also captured Big Ten heptathlon and decathlon titles this year, was named the USTFCCCA Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year as the highest-finishing performer at this year's NCAA indoor championship who also achieved USTFCCCA All-Academic status. The Saarbrucken, Germany native is the first Gopher to earn the award.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with 68 USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
