MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team opened the 2016 season with a victory at home over the Iowa State Cyclones, 194.700-194.025.
"I'm very pleased with tonight," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "It was a great first meet and it was nice to see some new people step up and fulfill the roles we needed. We weren't perfect and there is always room for improvement, but that's okay and we all feel really good about the start of the season."
As a team, Minnesota claimed vault (49.050), uneven bars (48.550) and floor (48.700) and tied the Cyclones on beam with identical scores of 48.400.
Senior Lindsay Mable earned the all-around crown with a final tally of 38.900 and earned the highest scores on vault (9.900) and beam (9.850). Fellow senior Madeline Hanley won the title on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.850.
On vault, the first event for the Maroon and Gold, Mable was followed by Meaghan Sievers of Iowa State who notched a 9.850. Junior Rachel Haines finished within the top three with a score of 9.825.
On the uneven bars, junior Bailie Holst followed Hanley for second place. She tied with Hilary Green of the Cyclones, both earning a 9.825.
After the first two rotations, the Gophers held the lead with a score of 97.600-97.00.
The top three scores on beam belonged to Mable, Hanley (9.825) and Haylee Young of Iowa State (9.800).
On the final event for the Maroon and Gold, floor exercise, Mable and Holst earned second and third place marks after tallying a 9.800 and a 9.775, respectively.
"For next week, we're going to continue to work the routines and confidence levels," said Hansen. "The girls are used to being in the arena again with all the lights, people and excitement so we'll use all of that as we look to take on Maryland."
LOOKING AHEAD
Next weekend, the Maroon and Gold continue their four-meet homestand as they welcome the Terrapins of Maryland in a Big Ten conference match-up. The first rotation is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
