The Gophers capture the win at the Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS - The Gophers hosted the final day of the inaugural Minnesota Invitational on Saturday. They topped the scores with a total of 1411 points.
WOMEN
The Gophers opened the finals with the 1650-yard freestyle. Breanne Siwicki took second place in 16:46.28, which was her in-season best. Erin Emery followed her in third place.
Chantal Nack won the 200-yard backstroke when she edged out Tevyn Waddell for first place. Her 1:59.23 was an in-season best.
Avestruz won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.15, followed by teammates Dani Bergeson and Kaia Grobe in second and third place. Bergeson's 51.69 was her in-season best.
The Gophers took the top four spots in the 200-yard breaststroke, led by Kaela Marcus in 2:19.17. Madison Preiss, Rae Bullinger and Tara Chapman followed Marcus. Bullinger notched her in-season best with a time of 2:19.29.
Danielle Nack won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.67. Rina Krupsky, Allison Schumacher, and Siwicki followed her in third, fourth and fifth place.
The Gopher relay closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:25.76).
MEN
Minnesota took the top three spots in the 1650 free to open the finals. Michael Messner led the Gophers with a time of 15:43.02. Logan Redondo and Nick Plachinski followed him in second and third place, respectively.
Bowe Becker captured first place in the 100 free in 43.91, which was his in-season best. Daryl Turner and Paul Fair took the next two spots in the race.
Bushman won the 200 breast in 1:58.97, an in season best. Brenner Hohenstein and Nick Hatanaka followed him in third and fourth place.
Nick Orf finished off the individual events with a win in the 200 fly (1:50.23). Garner Kohrell finished in second place and Matt Thomas finished in third place.
The Gophers closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2:57.50.
GOPHERS AT THE USA COLLEGE CHALLENGE
Kierra Smith, Jakub Maly, Brooke Zeiger, Lindsey Horejsi and Conner McHugh headed to Indianapolis, Indiana this weekend to compete on a Big Ten team against Team USA on Saturday and Sunday.
Horejsi and McHugh opened the meet for the Gophers, both swimming as part of their respective Big Ten `B' 400-yard medley relay teams. Both of the teams finished in fourth place: the men's in 3:08.61 and the women's in 3:35.82.
Zeiger then participated in the 400-yard individual medley, where she finished in second place behind USA's Brooke Forde. Her 4:05.41 was the fastest collegiate time in the country.
During the men's 400-yard IM, Maly finished in third place, posting a time of 3:48.26, his in-season best.
Smith followed Maly as the next Gopher in the meet, competing as part of the 200-yard breaststroke. She notched a 2:05.83, which was her in-season best by nearly four seconds.
McHugh competed in his first individual race as part of the 200-yard breast, finishing in 1:56.34, his in-season best.
Zeiger competed in the 800-yard free relay on the Big Ten's `C' team, which finished in fifth place (7:15.46).
Maly competed as part of the Big Ten `B' team, which finished in third place with a time of 6:31.82.
Team USA took the 185-111 lead to conclude day one. The meet resumes at 10:30 am CT on Sunday.
