The Gophers have a busy weekend ahead, as they will split their time between hosting the Jean K. Freeman Invitational, and heading to Atlanta, Georgia, for the AT&T Winter Nationals. The Gophers are ranked amongst the top teams in the nation, the women at No. 21 and the men at No. 23.
JEAN K. FREEMAN INVITATIONAL
Minnesota will host the Jean K. Freeman Invitational Dec. 2-3. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m., with finals at 6 p.m. See the table above for the schedule and psych sheet.
The meet, like the Aquatic Center, is named for the Gophers' legendary coach of 31 years who retired in 2004 and passed away from cancer in 2010. Freeman led the Gophers to back-to-back Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000 and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times. She was a pioneer for women's athletics whose legacy extends far beyond her team's athletic achievements.
AT&T WINTER NATIONALS
Twenty-two Gophers will head to Atlanta for the AT&T Winter Nationals Nov. 30-Dec. 3. More than 400 swimmers are expected to compete at the meet, including five members of the US Olympic Team. Seven total sessions will take place at the meet between Wednesday and Saturday.
Minnesota will have collegiate competition of Florida, Indiana and North Carolina at the meet, as well as club competition.
Headed to the meet are Logan Redondo, Conner McHugh, Danielle Nack, Bowe Becker, Hunter Doerr, John Bushman, Tevyn Waddell, Paul Fair, Rae Bullinger, Eric Sande, Breanne Siwicki, Michael Messer, Noah Busch, Nick Hatanaka, Erin Emery, Lindsey Horejsi, Zoe Avestruz, Brooke Zeiger, Daryl Turner, Kaela Marcus, Katelyn Holmquist and Tuomas Pokkinen.
LAST TIME OUT
The Minnesota swimmers and divers have found plenty of success so far this season. Last time out, the Gophers hosted the inaugural Minnesota Invitational, in which they scored 1,411 points. At the meet, Siwicki, Chantal Nack, Dani Bergeson, Bullinger and Becker posted in-season bests.
That same weekend, Kierra Smith, Jakub Maly, Horejsi, McHugh and Zeiger competed against Team USA as part of the Big Ten team at the USA College Challenge. The meet saw many solid performances, including Zeiger's 4:05.41 finish in the 400-yard individual medley, which was the fastest collegiate time in the country. After clocking a time of 59.50 in the 100-yard breaststroke, Horejsi was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Between Nov. 18 and Nov. 20, the Minnesota divers competed in the IUPUI Diving Invitational, where they also had a successful weekend. Among the highlights were first place finishes from Yu Zhou (1m) and Sarah Bacon (3m). Following her solid performance, Zhou earned her 13th Big Ten weekly honor.
