Riedy Wins Weight Throw at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. (GopherSports.com) - Redshirt junior Mac Riedy claimed his first career individual title for the University of Minnesota men's track & field program on Friday, winning the weight throw at the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi.

Riedy's win kicked off the season for the Maroon & Gold as the native of Waukesha, Wis., paced the field at 20.11 meters (65-11.75 ft.).

Meanwhile, Minnesota All-American Luca Wieland opened the heptathlon competition by winning all four of Friday's events, building a score of 3,511 points and nearly a 1,000-point lead with three events left to go. Evan Hieber of South Dakota State is currently in second with 2,553 points.

Wieland paced the field in the 60 meters (6.92), the long jump (7.46 meters, 24-05.75 ft.), the shot put (14.83 meters, 48-08.00 ft.) and the high jump (2.10 meters, 6-10.75 ft.).

The Gophers closed out the night with a pair of top-four finishes in the shot put as Bryan Bjerk finished third (15.91 meters, 52-02.50 ft.) and Jonathan Tharaldsen came in fourth (15.74 meters, 51-07.75 ft.).

Wieland finishes up the weekend on Saturday with the final three events of the heptathlon (60-meter hurdles, pole vault, 1,000 meters).
