Albrechtsen Wins High Jump at ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa - Sofie Albrechtsen won the high jump, and Liz Berkholtz, Madeline Strandemo, and Emma Spagnola climbed up the Gophers' all-time top-10 lists in their respective events as the University of Minnesota women's track & field team competed at day one of the Iowa State Classic Friday.
Albrechtsen won the high jump with a leap of 1.76 meters (5-09.25). Fellow Gophers Heta Tuuri and Taylor Wiebke each cleared 1.75m (5-08.75 ), placing third and fourth, respectively. Meanwhile, in the long jump, Amanda Beckman recorded a career-best long jump of 5.74m (18-10) for fifth place.
Erin Hawkins (24.44) and Spagnola (24.48) led five Gophers in the 200-meter dash, placing sixth and seventh, respectively. Spagnola's career-best 24.48 moved her into ninth in Gophers' history, and Sophia Anderson (25.45), Bolade Jinadu (25.69), and Erin Huls (26.33) all ran collegiate-best times as well.
Liz Berkholtz ran the second-fastest 3,000m run in Gophers' history, clocking a personal best 9:19.79 for fourth place at the ISU Classic. Madeline Strandemo also moved into fourth among all-time Gophers with a career-best of 9:21.81 in seventh place. Patty O'Brien (9:53.12) and Emily Castanias (10:07.02) ran career-best 3Ks as well.
Six Gophers competed in the 60-meter hurdles, led by Kimberly Golding and Emma Spagnola advancing to finals. Golding finished in third place in 8.46 seconds, and Spagnola took fourth in 8.44 seconds. In addition, Alex Beckman ran a season-best 8.88 seconds, and Albrechtsen clocked a collegiate-best 9.18 seconds.
In the 5,000-meter run, Bailey Ness clocked a career-best 17:19.50 while Tamara Gorman ran her first collegiate 5K in 17:09.52.
Action at the Iowa State Classic continues all day on Saturday, beginning with sections 5-7 of the women's 800-meter run at 10 a.m. The women's shot put kicks off the field events at noon.
