Gophers Place Fourth at B1G Championships

The Golden Gophers finished fourth at the 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships tonight in West Lafayette, Ind., after totaling 919 points over the course of the meet. Minnesota's Matt Barnard was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Jakub Maly and Manny Pollard were selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
Minnesota had an impressive showing in the platform diving event, with four divers in the championship final. Manny Pollard led the way with a silver finish after totaling 416.00 points. Fellow senior Dylan Zoe followed for bronze with a 391.20. Matt Barnard placed fourth with a score of 387.15. Freshman Alan LeBlang finished eighth on platform (301.15). Daniel Monaghan also scored for the Gophers after finishing 20th (243.15).
The Gophers had a strong showing in the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Conner McHugh earned bronze and broke another school record with a time of 1:54.08. Jakub Maly finished seventh with a 1:56.31. Maly previously held the record at 1:54.57. Senior John Bushman notched a 13th-place mark in the 200 breast with a 1:57.97. Eric Sande recorded a lifetime best time of 1:59.25 for 19th place overall, and was followed by teammate Nick Hatanaka for 20th (1:59.32).
Bowe Becker placed seventh in the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.54. The rookie also placed seventh in the 50 free (19.68), and was a member of four Minnesota relays. Paul Fair finished 10th in the 100 free with a lifetime best time of 43.59, while fellow junior Daryl Turner placed 19th (44.20).
Junior Nick Orf finished 12th in the 200 butterfly for Minnesota after posting a season-best time of 1:46.53.
Freshman Michael Messner finished 13th in the 1,650 free with a time of 15:23.80. Nick Plachinski, another Gopher rookie, placed 26th in the mile with a personal best of 15:41.37.
Following the meet, Minnesota opted to swim a 200 free relay time trial. Becker, Fair, Turner and Noah Busch earned an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:17.79 to advance to the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Minnesota diving will head to Texas A&M for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships from March 7-9 to compete for spots at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
