ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (GopherSports.com) - A pair of Gophers throwers finished first and second in the shot put on Saturday at Bethel's Gene Glader Classic including a highlight performance from a Maroon & Gold newcomer.
True freshman Jonathan Tharaldsen qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior Championship with his personal record on Saturday at Bethel's Gene Glader Classic. Competing unattached, last year's Gatorade North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year won the event at 17.03 meters (55-10.5 ft.) on his final throw of the day. Bryan Bjerk finished second at 15.87 meters (52-00.75 ft.).
While the two throwers were the only current Gophers in action this weekend, Gophers All-American alum Hassan Mead clocked a personal record 7:40.95 in the 3,000 meters on Friday at the House of Track. The performance, which was well under the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships, earned Mead a second-place finish at the event.
