Minnesota Opens Up Competition at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the Stanford Invitational on Friday with 10 top-10 performances including a pair from All-American Luca Wieland.
Wieland, who also qualified for Saturday's 110-meter hurdle finals with a personal record of 14.83 in the prelims, finished second in the invitational long jump competition with a leap of 7.45 meters (24-05.50 ft.) and also came in 10th in the high jump at 2.06 meters (6-09.00 ft.).
Meanwhile, Sam Elsner posted a runner-up finish in the discus at 55.30 meters (181-05 ft.) with Luke Johnson finishing ninth at 50.22 meters (164-09 ft.). The Gophers also had a pair of top-10 finishers in the 400 meter finals as Jack Wellenstein finished sixth at 47.94 and Nate Roese came in eighth at 47.99.
Minnesota posted three competitors in the top 10 of the high jump with Ryan Lockard coming in sixth at 2.11 meters (6-11.00 ft.) while Nick Bachinski tied for eighth at 2.06 meters (6-09.00 ft.) and Wieland finished 10th at the same height.
The Maroon & Gold also featured top-10 performances from Andrew Ajaluwa, finished eighth in the collegiate long jump competition at 6.31 meters (20-08.50 ft.) and Rashawn Fountain, who finished tied for 10th overall and seventh in his section of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.86.
The Gophers also featured Brad Neumann's 15th-place showing in the 100-meter dash preliminaries at 10.67 while Obsa Ali ran a 14:01.55 in the 5,000 meters. The Gophers also ran several competitors in the 1,500 meters with Derek Wiebke leading the way at 3:45.14 followed by Christian Skaret at 3:49.39, Shane Streich at 3:52.36 and Wayde Hall at 3:54.75.
Adam Zutz will compete in the men's 10,000 meter competition at 12:51 p.m. CT on Friday night.
Minnesota wraps up the Stanford Invitational on Saturday while the Maroon & Gold will also compete at the Hamline Invitational on Sunday.
