BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (GopherSports.com) - The No. 24 University of Minnesota men's track & field program added three All-Americans on Saturday at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as the Gophers closed out the event with a total of five All-Americans.
Luca Wieland was named a First Team All-American while Luke Johnson and Goaner Deng were named Second Team All-Americans.
"We sent five men down to Birmingham, and all five are coming home as All-Americans. That's something we're sure proud of," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "I'm really happy for the guys. They've worked hard all winter, and each of them certainly earned their honors."
With a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, Wieland earned his second-straight First Team All-America nod after winning the national championship one year ago. Wieland totaled out at 5,919 points over the seven events - posting a time of 8.23 in the 60-meter hurdles, a time of 2:55.77 in the 1,000 meters and a height of 5.00 meters (16-04.75 ft.) in the pole vault.
A senior captain from Red Wing, Minn., Johnson picked up his first career All-America nod with a 14th-place finish in the shot put - earning Second Team honors. The Minnesota senior capped off the national meet with a performance of 18.30 meters (60-00.50 ft.).
The Gophers also picked up a Second Team All-America honor from senior captain Goaner Deng, who qualified for the 800 meter finals but did not finish. The accolade is Deng's third career All-America merit.
Minnesota opened the weekend with Second Team All-America honors on Friday from Ryan Lockard (10th in the high jump) and Gian Ferretti (15th in the weight throw).
