TEMPE, Ariz. (GopherSports.com) - Sean Donnelly made his official University of Minnesota debut with an emphatic victory in the hammer throw on Friday, besting the school record by more than five meters and posting the ninth-best throw in the world this year at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
A four-time NCAA Division III national champion and an eight-time Division III All-American at Mount Union, Donnelly cleared 74.35 meters (243-11.00 ft.) on his second attempt on the night as the Minnesota men's track & field team notched an individual hammer throw champion and a new school record at the Baldy Castillo Invitational for the second-straight year.
The Willoughby, Ohio native passed current Gophers thrower Gian Ferretti on top of the school's all-time hammer throw list the performance. Ferretti set a school hammer throw record of 68.94 meters (226-02 ft.) to win the Baldy Castillo Invitational last year, also in his outdoor debut for the Maroon & Gold.
In addition to the school record and world mark, Donnelly's performance also ranks first in the NCAA this year and snapped a meet record of 69.24 meters (227-02 ft.) that has stood since 1998.
Meanwhile, Ferretti came in second at this year's meet with a toss of 63.96 meters and Viktor Stelter finished 10th at 56.85 meters.
Aaron Bartnik added Minnesota's second title of the weekend with a win in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The senior paced the race at 9:03.39 while Charlie Lawrence came in seventh at 9:37.16.
The Gophers continue competition at the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday.
