The University of Minnesota Gophers fell to No. 3 ranked Ohio State on Friday 4-0. They were in all of the top three singles spots with Matic Spec winning the first set over No. 2 Mikael Torpegaard.
"Overall, I think we are on the right track," head coach Geoff Young said. "We just have to keep working really hard in practices and use these matches as a way to improve. I think that something good, some good result, is going to happen soon."
Jeremy Lynn and Justyn Levin dropped the first match of the day at No. 3 doubles falling 6-1 in just their second match together. The pair is now 1-1.
Marino Alpeza and Ruben Weber followed suit, losing 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. The pair is now 8-12 together.
No. 28 ranked pair of Felix Corwin and Matic Spec saw their match against No. 78 ranked Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce go unfinished, down 5-4 when it was abandoned.
The Gophers went up against four nationally ranked players in singles competition.
The Buckeyes increased their lead and earned the first singles win with Alpeza falling 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.
Lynn followed, dropping his match at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-1.
OSU secured the win with Levin falling 6-3, 6-2 against No. 92 ranked Pollanen.
Spec, Weber and Corwin all had their matches go unfinished. Spec was battling No. 2 Torpegaard, Weber against No. 87 Chris Diaz and Corwin took on No. 36 Hugo Di Feo. Spec carried his momentum from his undefeated weekend last week that earned him B1G Athlete of the Week.
"He is playing well, and that was against one of the better players in the country," Young said of Spec's performance Friday. "I think he is really happy with his tennis and the way that it's going."
Minnesota will host No. 39 Penn State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
