Gophers in Command at B1G Triple Dual

Day 1 Results Get Acrobat Reader

Minnesota is in command after the first day of a Big Ten triple dual meet in West Lafayette, Ind. The Gopher women lead 107-97 over Purdue and 137-68 over Northwestern, while the men are up 111-92 on Purdue and 152-52 on Northwestern. Several Gophers who already had NCAA provisional times beat the "B" standard again.

WOMEN
Yu Zhou won both springboard diving events. She scored 312.65 in 1-meter and led a 1-2-3 Gophers sweep with a 344.05 in 3-meter. Bacon was second in 1-meter (312.30) and third in 3-meter (317.45). Lexi Tenenbaum was second in 3-meter at 325.40.

Tevyn Waddell came into the weekend with the Big Ten's fastest 100 backstroke time this season, and won her race in 54.21. Katelyn Holmquist (57.36) finished sixth and also scored.

Lindsey Horejsi posted another "B" cut in winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.56. Kierra Smith took third in 1:02.61, and Rachel Munson scored with a fifth-place 1:04.03. Smith (2:04.24) and Horejsi (2:04.63) finished second and third in the 200 individual medley, while Dani Bergeson (2:05.64) was sixth.

Zoe Avestruz claimed the 50 free title in 23.05. Chantal Nack (23.99) and Allison Schumacher (24.07) were sixth and eighth.

The Gophers won the 200 free relay to open the meet, with Waddell, Horejsi, Kaia Grobe and Avestruz posting a 1:40.76. Minnesota's 800 free relay team of Chantal Nack, Avestruz, Waddell and Holmquist placed second in 7:25.91.

Chantal Nack was the runner-up in the 200 free in 1:49.60. Erin Emery (10:07.52) and Lauren Lalumiere (10:13.78) finished fourth and fifth in the 1,000 free. Breanne Siwicki was the Gophers' top finisher in the 200 butterfly, sixth in 2:04.78.

MEN
Paul Fair, who already has a "B" time this year, won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.28. Nick Saulnier (1:39.35) finished behind him in second, and Brian Poon (1:40.02) also scored in fifth.

Daryl Turner won the 100 backstroke by two-plus seconds in 47.73 (under the "B" standard). Noah Busch (50.34) was fourth.

Bowe Becker won another 50 free title, this time in 20.13 ("B" cut). Turner (20.67) and Busch (20.89) placed fourth and fifth.

Nick Orf (1:49.27) and Tuomas Pokkinen (1:49.38) finished first and second in the 200 butterfly.

Brian Poon won the 200 IM in 1:49.28. Conner McHugh was fourth in 1:51.01, with Jonathon Thielen (1:52.30) and John Bushman (1:52.79) behind him.

Minnesota's 200 medley relay of Turner, McHugh, Fair and Becker won in 1:27.87. The Gophers later won the 800 free relay to cap the evening's races. Fair, Pokkinen, Saulnier and Poon finished in 6:37.36.

McHugh finished second in the 100 breast, with another "B" time of 54.64. Brenner Hohenstein (56.48) and Bushman (56.88) were fourth and fifth.

Matt Barnard placed third on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 351.85. Alan LeBlang placed fourth (307.25) to lead Minnesota on the 1-meter board.

Nick Plachinski (9:14.37), Logan Redondo (9:18.67) and Michael Messner (9:23.99) claimed the third through fifth places in the 1,000 free.
