PRs Abound at ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa - As part of its three-meet weekend, Minnesota has a number of Gophers competing at the Iowa State Classic this weekend. Friday's action saw the Gophers earn 14 career-best performances at ISU's Lied Recreation Athletic Center.
A week after running the second-fastest mile in Minnesota history (4:38.88), Madeline Strandemo ran the second-fastest 3,000m in program history at 9:17.54 to place sixth in the invite section of the 3K. Patty O'Brien also set a career-best time in 9:44.29 for 28th place. The duo faced a stacked field of 43 runners, including 2016 NCAA cross country champion Karissa Schweizer of Missouri running 9:06.60 for the win.
Meanwhile, Tamara Gorman led the attached Gopher athletes in the unseeded sections of the 3,000m run with a fourth-place finish in a career-best 9:55.73. Following her was Sarah Klecker in sixth (9:57.83, PR), Emily Betz in seventh (10:00.47, PR), Molly Eastman in eighth (10:02.30, PR), and Abby Kargol in ninth (10:02.81, PR).
Two unattached Gophers and Iowa natives raced in the 3,000m as well as Elyse Prescott placed third in 9:55.44 and Abby Kohut-Jackson finished 10th in 10:04.45. In total, the Gophers collected eight PRs in the 3,000m run at the meet.
Fellow Gophers Carlin Schulz and Lindsey Smits set career-best times in their respective events as well. Schulz ran 17:41.03 for 18th place in the 5,000-meter run, and Smits ran 25.67 for 23rd place in the 200-meter dash.
Four unattached Gophers joined Smits in the 200m, all setting career-best times as well. Sophia Anderson led the way in 15th place (25.30), followed by Val Larson (19th, 25.51), Erin Huls (33rd, 25.95), and Meleah Biermaier (39th, 26.42).
The Gophers are competing at the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., and the UST Showcase hosted by the University of St. Thomas in addition to the two-day ISU Classic this weekend. Action continues at Iowa State at noon CT Saturday.
