"It's truly an honor to represent my teammates and the Gopher Hockey program as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award," Sheehy said. "It's been a great year...it's crazy to think that there are only a few weeks left in the season. We're certainly proud of what we've done so far, but we have a lot of goals left to accomplish, and we're looking forward to it."
The 2017 Big Ten Player of the Year and a First Team All-Big Ten selection, Sheehy currently leads the Big Ten and ranks tied for seventh nationally with 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) - all three statistics are career highs for the sophomore. The forward was named the league's co-scoring champion with 34 points in conference competition. Sheehy leads the nation with 37 even-strength points and 23 even-strength assists while his 19 multi-point games rank tied for second in the nation. Sheehy's 52 points are the most in a season by a Gopher since Ryan Potulny recorded 63 during the 2005-06 season. Potulny was named a Hobey Baker Award finalist that season - the last time a Gophers forward was among the top-10 candidates for college hockey's top honor.
"We couldn't be happier for Tyler. He's having a fantastic year for us, and he's a big part of our success so far this season," Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said. "He's a gifted hockey player, but he's an even better person. He brings a great attitude to the rink, his teammates love him, and he is a terrific representative of our program and the University of Minnesota."
Sheehy has played in all 73 games since joining the Gophers as a freshman in 2015-16. He currently has 83 career points (32 goals, 50 assists) for an average of 1.12 points per game.
Four previous Hobey Baker Award winners played college hockey at the University of Minnesota (Neal Broten in 1981, Robb Stauber in 1988, Brian Bonin in 1996, Jordan Leopold in 2002).
The ten finalists were selected by voting from all 60 Division I college hockey head coaches and by online fan balloting. Next, the 27-member Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting through www.hobeybaker.com from March 16-26 will determine this year's Hobey Baker Award winner. Criteria for the award include: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
The Hobey Hat Trick (three finalists) will be announced on March 30, 2017 and the Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 7, 2017 from Chicago during the NCAA Frozen Four. The award announcement will take place at the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier. The announcement will be televised live on the NHL Network and can be followed on the Hobey Baker website at 5p.m. CT.
The top-seeded Gophers (23-10-3 overall, 14-5-1-0 Big Ten) head to the 2017 Big Ten Tournament at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, where they'll play the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal matchup between Penn State and Michigan. Minnesota's semifinal game is slated for Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. CT.
