Lockard Leads Gophers in Outdoor Opener

TEMPE, Ariz. (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the outdoor season with nine top-10 finishes at the Baldy Castillo Invitational including a trio of competitors in the high jump.
Competing at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium, the high jumpers led the way behind Ryan Lockard's runner-up finish. Lockard and Arizona State's Joey Bryant both cleared 2.14 meters (7-00.25 ft.) with Bryant ending up with the win in a jump off. Meanwhile, Luca Wieland tied for sixth at 2.08 meters (6-09.75 ft.) while Nick Bachinski came in eighth at 2.03 meters (6-08.00 ft.).
In the discus, Bryan Bjerk added a personal record to finish third overall, hitting 55.26 meters (181-03 ft.).
The Gophers added two finishers in the top 10 of the 110-meter hurdles with Jon Tollefson coming in fourth in his outdoor debut for Minnesota at 14.47 while Eric Walker finished eighth at 14.81.
Matt Rosen picked up a personal record in the 800 meters, finishing ninth with a time of 1:50.55
Minnesota closed out the competition with a seventh-place showing in the 4x400 meter relay as Brad Neumann, Jackson Wellenstein, Nate Roese and Mitch Hechsel clocked at 3:10.59.
Glen Harold added an eighth-place finish in the pole vault on Friday night, clearing a height of 4.90 meters (16-00.75 ft.).
