Gophers Kick Off Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Madeline Strandemo won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a meet-record time of 10:07.46 to lead the Golden Gophers as members of the Minnesota women's track & field distance squad compete at the Raleigh Relays this weekend.
In her first race of the outdoor season, Strandemo cruised to a victory in the 3,000m steeplechase, defeating runner-up Hope Schmelzle of Northern Illinois (10:16.12) by nearly 10 seconds. Her time of 10:07.46 broke the previous Raleigh Relays meet record by nearly five seconds (10:12.25).
Four Gophers made their outdoor debuts in the 1,500-meter run led by Abby Lange, who recorded a career-best time of 4:35.45 to place 51st in a field of 105. Tess Wasowicz (4:36.16), Paige Peschel (career-best 4:40.61), and Samantha Prouty (4:43.77) also ran.
In the 5,000-meter run, Tamara Gorman (17:04.30) and Sarah Klecker (17:42.31) both recorded career-best times to lead the Gophers. Gorman placed 29th of 103 finishers while Klecker took 77th. Courtney Alama ran 18:08.41 in her first 5,000m of the season as well.
Six Gophers raced in the 10,000-meter run Friday evening led by Patty O'Brien, who ran a career-best 35:32.89 to place 21st, and Bailey Ness (35:42.68 for 24th). Meanwhile, Molly Eastman (36:18.12), Emily Betz (36:20.61), Carlin Schulz (36:36.93), and Abby Kargol (37:29.17) all ran their first 10,000m runs of their collegiate careers.
Action continues Saturday at the Raleigh Relays with the Gophers entered in the 4x800-meter relay and the 800-meter run. Paige Peschel, Lange, Prouty, and Wasowicz make up Minnesota's 4x800m relay team, and Strandemo is the lone Gopher slated to run the 800m.
