Gophers Open with Three Titles at UCLA

LOS ANGELES (GopherSports.com) - The No. 19 University of Minnesota men's track & field program opened the weekend with three individual titles at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and Legends of Track & Field Invitational.
The Maroon & Gold started the two-day competition with wins from Mitch Hechsel (800 meters), Evan Ferlic (1,500 meters) and Luca Wieland (shot put).
Hechsel led a group of three Gophers in the top five of the invitational 800 meters competition with his winning time of 1:49.16. Josh Tracy was one spot back in second at 1:51.09 while Matt Rosen finished fifth at 1:51.87.
Minnesota added two more top-five finishes in the 1,500 meters with Evan Ferlic leading all competitors to win the competition at 3:52.15. Wayde Hall was third overall at 3:52.70. Sam Carlson clocked a 3:57.95 in the race while Eric Colvin finished in 4:01.69.
Wieland posted a pair of top-three finishes in the opening day of competition including his win in the collegiate shot put at 14.69 meters (48-02.25 ft.). The Gophers captain added a third-place finish in the collegiate discus with a personal record of 45.20 meters (148-03.50 ft.).
Meanwhile, Minnesota recorded a pair of top-four finishes in the collegiate long jump with Sammie Houston finishing as the runner-up at 7.04 meters (23-01.00 ft.) and Jonathan Johnson coming in fourth at 6.93 meters (22-08.75 ft.).
Mac Riedy lead the Gophers in the hammer throw with a seventh-place finish at 56.56 meters (185-06.75 ft.) while Connor Rousemiller came in 11th at 51.83 meters (170-00.50 ft.).
Minnesota closed out the night with a personal record in the invitational 5,000 meters from Matt Welch, who finished ninth at 14:16.53.
The Maroon & Gold continue action at UCLA on Saturday while another contingency of competitors will be in action at the Hamline Invitational.
