Harold Headlines Opening Day at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (GopherSports.com) - Glen Harold picked up his fourth win of the outdoor season on Friday, leading the pole vault competition at Stanford's Cardinal Classic.
Competing at Cobb Track and Angell Field, Harold kicked off the weekend with a win for the Maroon & Gold - clearing 5.01 meters (16-05.25 ft.). The performance is the second time this season that Harold has cleared five meters. Tyler Tappe came in second at 4.86 meters (15-11.25 ft.).
Minnesota also had a strong showing in the 800 meters at the Cardinal Classic -- led by senior Mitch Hechsel, who posted a personal record of 1:47.39 to finish second overall. The mark also ranks fifth all-time on Minnesota's top performers list. Shane Streich added his own personal record, leading a 1-2-3 Minnesota finish in his section at 1:48.83. Derek Wiebke came in second in the section, just missing his personal record at 1:49.91 while Josh Tracy finished third with an outdoor personal record of 1:50.86. Matt Rosen led his section at 1:51.86.
Meanwhile, Luke May hit a personal record in the javelin and moved up to sixth all-time at Minnesota with his throw of 60.88 meters (199-09 ft.), finishing third. Logan Wolfley came in sixth with his own personal record at 57.61 meters (189-00 ft.).
Obsa Ali added Minnesota's third top-10 all-time performance of the night to close out Friday - running a personal record of 13:53.80 in the 5,000 meters to finish eighth. The mark ranks seventh on Minnesota's all-time top performers list.
Gian Ferretti added a runner-up finish in the hammer throw - hitting 61.24 meters (200-11 ft.) on his final throw of the day. Mac Riedy came in fifth with a toss of 56.05 meters (183-11 ft.).
Jonathan Webb just missed his personal record in the 200 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 21.46.
The Gophers continue competition at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday while another contingency of Minnesota student-athletes will be in action at Concordia-St. Paul's Holst Invitational.
