BROOKINGS, S.D. - The University of Minnesota men's track and field program won four events on the way to claiming a team title on Saturday at South Dakota State's Jim Emmerich Invitational.
The Gophers scored 101.333 points as a team, cruising to the team title ahead of North Dakota State with 61.666 points in the runner-up spot.
"After last week's Border Battle win, we really emphasized the need to keep progressing as a team," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "We didn't want to have a letdown after such an emotional meet last weekend. It took us a little while to get going today, but we ended the day with some really nice performances by the guys."
The Maroon & Gold were led by its 4x400 meter relay team of Jonathan Webb, Ben Psicihulis, Jackson Wellenstein and Josh Tracy, who clocked a 3:11.49 to pace the event at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings. Not only did the crew win the relay, they added another pair of event titles to boot.
Wellenstein, an All-American for the Maroon & Gold, added a win in the 400 meters at 47.69 while Psicihulis and Tracy finished first and second in the 600 meters at 1:18.22 and 1:19.09, respectively.
Nick Rink added a win in the mile for the University of Minnesota at 4:10.98. Sammie Houston added eight points with a personal record in the triple jump to finish as the runner-up at 14.66 meters (48-01.25 ft.).
Gopher All-American alum Nate Roese won the 800 meters at 1:49.74 as an unattached competitor.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend with the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
