Gophers Advance to Day Two At ITA Kick-Off

AUSTIN, Texas - The Gopher Men's Tennis program took the first step towards a berth to the ITA Indoor Team National Championship Tournament as they knocked off previously unbeaten Tennessee 4-3 after a lengthy rain delay at the ITA Kick-Off on Saturday afternoon.
For the second-straight match-up, Minnesota (1-1) got off to a hot start by securing the doubles point. The no. 26-ranked pair of Matic Spec and Felix Corwin knocked off the duo of Preston Touliatos and Adam Walton 7-6 (4) for the Volunteers, while Justyn Levin and Josip Krstanovic defeated Timo Stodder and Luis Valero 6-4 in second doubles.
The battle of two top-40 players in first singles went the way of Tennesse (7-1) as no. 36 Stodder defeated no. 35 Milicevic 6-4, 6-1. Felix Corwin and no. 73 Matic Spec remained unbeaten in the dual season at second and third singles, respectively. Corwin defeated Touliatos 6-4, 6-4 while Spec knocked off Valero 7-5, 6-4.
The Volunteers surged back with victories in sixth singles, as Scott Jones defeated Justyn Levin in three sets, and fourth singles, as Adam Walton knocked off Jackson Allen in the third as well. Eli Ogilvy secured the victory for Minnesota, taking down Nicaise Muamba in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
The Gophers will now meet Notre Dame, who claimed an upset victory over No. 8 Texas on the other side of the bracket in Austin, for a bid to 2018 ITA National Team Indoors next month on Feb. 16-19 in Seattle, Washington. That match is set for a 1 p.m. start time.
