MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program returns to action this weekend with a pair of competitions in the state of Wisconsin. The Gophers will split up on Saturday, Oct. 13 with one group of Maroon & Gold runners heading to the Pre-Nationals in Madison (Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course) while another group will run at the UW-La Crosse's Jim Drews Invitational in Ettrick (Ettrick Golf Club).
Minnesota will run in the Pre-Nationals men's eight-kilometer White Race at 12:15 p.m. CT while the men's eight-kilometer race in Ettrick is slated for 11:40 a.m. CT.
Gophers Bounce Back After Griak
The Maroon & Gold won their first two meets of the year (Oz Memorial, Dirksen/Greeno Invite) and then finished second to Duke at the annual Roy Griak Invitational in one of the closest team battles in meet history. The Blue Devils claimed their second Griak team title (2010) with 74 points in the 2018 Merrill Fischbein Men's Gold Competition with the Gophers finishing second at 77 points. The three-point separation tied for the closest finish in race history (2009, 1996). All five Gophers scorers finished in the top-25 of the eight-kilometer competition.
Khalid Hussein Claims TC5K Crown
The University of Minnesota men's cross country program was off over the weekend although the Maroon & Gold had a dominating presence at the 2018 Twin Cities 5K on Saturday, Oct. 6 with the top-five finishers including race champion Khalid Hussein. Hussein clocked a 15:12 on Saturday to lead the field in the five-kilometer race, edging Gophers teammates Jordan MacIntosh in second at 15:13 and Declan Dahlberg in third at 15:14. Dawson LaRance finished fourth at 15:23 while Hunter Staack came in fifth at 15:29. All five runners competed unattached in the race.

Redshirt junior Evan Ferlic will serve as team captain for the Minnesota men's cross country program this year. He opened the year with a an eight-kilometer personal record of 25:08.0 at the IU Open and later improved that mark to 24:34.5 at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Ferlic closed out the year by running a 10-kilometer personal record of 29:59.61 at the NCAA Midwest Regional – a mark that ranks 11th all-time at the University of Minnesota.
Gophers Add Four to 2018 Cross Country Team
Minnesota will have four new faces on the roster this season as the Gophers have added true freshmen Declan Dahlberg (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) and Khalid Hussein (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) along with redshirt freshman transfer Seth Eliason (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins / Georgetown). Additionally, Dawson LaRance will join Minnesota's cross country squad as a redshirt freshman this season after competing for the Gophers track & field program as a true freshman last season.
