Gophers Pick Up Exhibition Win Over Under-18 Team

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Rem Pitlick notched three points and Eric Schierhorn made 29 saves on 30 shots as the No. 6 Gopher Hockey program took down the U.S. National Under-18 Team 7-1 on Saturday afternoon in exhibition action at USA Hockey Arena.
Thirteen Gophers tallied points in the win with Pitlick's pair of goals and one assist leading the way. Joey Marooney added two late goals while Robbie Stucker, Brent Gates Jr. and Tyler Sheehy also found the net for the Maroon & Gold.
After a back-and-forth, scoreless first period, Minnesota pocketed a pair of goals in the second period at USA Hockey Arena. Pitlick put the Gophers out in front at 9:32 with a breakaway, unassisted tally while Stucker's slap shot from the point at 14:13 made it a two-goal game. Ryan Zuhlsdorf and Scott Reedy picked up assists on Stucker's goal.
The U.S. got on the board at 2:07 of the third period when Judd Caulfield found the back of the net, but Minnesota answered back with five-straight goals to close out the game. Gates lit the lamp with assists from Pitlick and Jack Sadek at 8:35 with Sheehy following suit at 10:57 off feeds from Sampo Ranta and Tommy Novak. Pitlick scored his second unassisted goal of the night at 17:21 of the third during a Gophers penalty kill before Marooney scored twice in 18 seconds to close out the night. Matt Denman set up Marooney's first goal at 18:55 while Cullen Munson and Nathan Burke earned assists on the game's final goal at 19:13.
