Preview: Gophers Set to Host Florida State

The Gophers swimming and diving teams will host Florida State University at home on Oct. 20th. Gopher seniors will be honored before the dual start time of 10 a.m.
Women's Preview
During last year's dual against Florida State, Minnesota edged out the Seminoles 153.5-146.5. The Gophers posted a series of top-five finishes, including stand-out performances from sophomore Mackenzie Padington, who notched two first-place spots in the 200 free and 500 free for Minnesota.
The Maroon and Gold took multiple first and second place finishes against the Badgers last weekend. Lindsey Kozelsky and Rachel Munson finished first and second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke while Chantal Nack and Padington secured first and second in the 200 free. Additionally, Padington won the 100 free and the 500 free, with her 500 free finish in 4:50.68 becoming the 12th-fastest time in the nation this year.
Kristen Hayden dominated in the diving well, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Hayden was recognized as the Big Ten Diver of the Week following her performance in Wisconsin, where her scores of 291.45 and 308.70 respectively, qualified her for NCAA Diving Zones this March in Austin, Texas.
Men's Preview
The last time these two teams met, then #21 Minnesota fell short of upsetting #20 Seminoles in Tallahassee. Against Florida State, Nick Plachinski took two first-place finishes for the Gophers in the 500 free and the 1000 free with times of 4:34.62 and 9:28.06 respectively.
The Gophers swimming and diving team is coming off of impressive performances in Madison. Freshman Max McHugh notched two first place finishes for the Gophers in the 100 and 200 yard breast, ultimately claiming Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. The Sturgeon Bay, Wis., native posted the sixth-fastest time in the nation in the 100 breast in 54.44, and posted a NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 200 breast, touching in 1:57.91 with the third-fastest NCAA time this season.
Senior Nick Yang will look to replicate his performances from Wisconsin in Minnesota's first home dual Saturday. Yang gained Big Ten Diver of the Week Honors after qualifying for NCAA Zones in the 1-meter and 3-meter with marks of 356.62 and 421.88 respectively. Senior captain, Plachinski grabbed the Gophers another first place finish in the 500 free, touching in 4:34.53.

Florida State opened up their season two weeks ago. The No. 25 women sweeping both Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh with finals of 189-110 and 197-102 while the No. 20 men's team beat Pittsburgh and fell to Georgia Tech with respective scores of 176-123 and 141-158.
In their sweep, the women won 10 of 16 events against Georgia Tech, and eight total events against Pittsburgh. Both men's and women's squads performed in the diving well, eventually claiming the men's and women's ACC Divers of the Week honors after their first competition.
Traffic Update
The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced that I-35 W will be shut down completely between Highway 62 and I-94 from Friday evening at 10 p.m. until Monday morning at 5 a.m. Fans planning to attend any University of Minnesota athletic evets are encouraged to provide themselves with ample time to reach their destinations.
