Day Two Domination at the Hawkeye Invite
11/17/2018 12:01:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
IOWA CITY - The Gophers arrived for their second day at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center hoping to build on their day one success. They did just that by claiming first place in eight of 16 events and setting five new meet records.
The women closed out day two firmly atop the leaderboard, standing at 764 points and leading second-place Nebraska by 157. The men ended the evening with a total of 540 points, maintaining third place and staying within 50 points of the overall leader, Purdue.
For the second night in a row, the Minnesota women took the top spot in the first event. The 200-yard medley relay team of Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Zoe Avestruz notched a time of 1:37.82 to touch the wall almost three full seconds ahead of the second-finishing relay. Their time was the third-best in the nation so far in the 2018-19 season, also breaking the previous meet record time of 1:39.18 set by Michigan in 2011.
The night only got better for Waddell as she went on to win the 100-yard backstroke in 52.48, the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.08 and lead off the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team--consisting of Chantal Nack, Mackenzie Padington and Avestruz--for a 7:09.22 finish. Her four event wins on day two brings her number of first-place finishes up to seven for the meet thus far.
Mackenzie Padington followed up her stellar day one performance with a record-setting win in the 200 freestyle. She went 1:44.23, swimming neck-and-neck with teammate Chantal Nack (1:44.52), to earn herself the event win. Her time was also fast enough to give her the meet record, the pool record and the third-best time in the NCAA this year.
The Gophers snagged another first-place finish when Kozelsky won a tight race in the 100-yard breaststroke event. She overtook Podmanikova of SMU in the final 25 yards to snag the event win in 59.60.
On the men's side, Max McHugh continued to lead the competition in the 100-yard breaststroke, claiming first place in the event in addition to recording the nation's second-best time so far this year. His time of 51.73 matches the "A" cut and automatically qualifies him to race the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas this coming March.
Nick Yang once again ran the show in the diving competition, finishing day two with a winning score of 380.90 on the one-meter board. He takes to the tower on the final day of competition where he will try to sweep the men's diving events in Iowa.
The Gopher men were just shy of the top spot in multiple races on day two, with Nick Saulnier and Matthew Thomas taking second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.97) and the 100-yard butterfly (47.94) respectively. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Saulnier, Tim Sates, Cameron Kelley and Kyle Van Niekirk also claimed a third-place finish after touching the wall in 6:31.43.
The Gophers will return to the pool Saturday morning for the final day of competition at the Hawkeye Invite. Live stats will be available at the link above, beginning with the start of the morning session at 10:00 am CT.
