Gophers Claim Three Titles in Indoor Opener

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Minnesota men's track & field program captured three event titles on Friday evening as the Maroon & Gold opened the indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Open.

The Golden Gophers 4x400 meter relay team of Grant Fuller, Ben Psicihulis, Jonathan Webb and Zach Nelson led the field on Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex while unattached competitors Teddy Frid and Jackson Wellenstein won the 60-meter hurdles and the 400 meters, respectively.

The meet marked the start of a new track & field era at the University of Minnesota with both men's and women's programs now under the leadership of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Matt Bingle

"I told them yesterday before we left that there's no place I'd rather be than right here with them right now," Bingle said. "I told them that we get to do something that no one has ever done before at this university. It was great to have both teams together as one team. It was fun. It was just a great experience for us. There was a ton of energy. That way, it was really good and we're really happy with that."

The team of Fuller, Psicihulis, Webb and Nelson closed out the night on the track for the Maroon & Gold with a win in the 4x400 meter relay, clocking a time of 3:16.08. Webb added a runner-up showing in the 200 meters at 21.77 while Psicihulis was second behind Wellenstein in the 400 meters with Psicihulis running 48.20 and the unattached Wellenstein coming in at 47.68. Frid added a second unattached title for the Maroon & Gold with his time of 8.16 in the 60-meter hurdles while Eric Walker came in third at 8.41.

Meanwhile, the Gophers carried two of the top four finishers in the triple jump with Sammie Houston and James Travis both scoring for the University of Minnesota. Houston finished second at 14.35 meters (47-01.00 ft.) while Travis was fourth at 13.97 meters (45-10.00 ft.). Mason Roomes finished third in the long jump at 6.95 meters (22-09.75 ft.) and Eric Rousemiller came in fourth in the shot put at 16.54 meters (54-03.25 ft.). Minnesota added two more fourth-place showings from Lucas Trapp in the one mile at 4:30.91 and Fuller in the 600 meters at 1:22.46.
