'U' Heads to NCAA Midwest Regional

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program heads to the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional this weekend in Peoria, Ill. Bradley hosts this year's NCAA Midwest Regional at Newman Golf Course with the women's six-kilometer race set for 11 a.m. CT followed by the men's 10-kilometer race at 12 p.m. CT.
Success at the NCAA Midwest Regional
The University of Minnesota has carried an NCAA All-Regional honoree for each of the last five years and 20 of the last 21 seasons. Among the selections are NCAA regional champions Andrew Carlson (2002, 2004), Antonio Vega (2005) and Hassan Mead (2008, 2009)
Basten Earns All-Big Ten Honors
Alec Basten clocked one of the fastest eight-kilometer times in University of Minnesota history to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors at the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. Basten's time of 23:45.1 was not only a personal record for the redshirt sophomore, it stands as the eighth-fastest eight-kilometer in Gopher cross country history. His eighth-place finish on Sunday stands as his third top-10 finish of the year while Basten has led the Maroon & Gold in all four of his races this season. Minnesota has now carried an All-Big Ten runner for five-straight seasons with nine Gophers earning all-conference honors over that stretch. The Gophers finished seventh at the Big Ten meet with 164 points.
Gophers Dominate Fall Finale
The University of Minnesota men's cross country team scored a perfect team score of 15 on Friday, Nov. 2 to win St. John's Fall Finale while unattached freshman Khalid Hussein picked up the individual crown to give the Maroon & Gold its 12th-straight individual medalist at the race.
Khalid Hussein Claims TC5K Crown
The University of Minnesota men's cross country program had a dominating presence at the 2018 Twin Cities 5K on Saturday, Oct. 6 with the top-five finishers including race champion Khalid Hussein. Hussein clocked a 15:12 to lead the field in the five-kilometer race, edging Gophers teammates Jordan MacIntosh in second at 15:13 and Declan Dahlbergin third at 15:14. Dawson LaRance finished fourth at 15:23 while Hunter Staack came in fifth at 15:29. All five runners competed unattached in the race.
Ferlic to Captain Gophers XC Squad
Redshirt junior Evan Ferlic will serve as team captain for the Minnesota men's cross country program this year. The Roseville, Minn., native posted personal records in three of his five races last season with the Maroon & Gold and factored into the team's score four times. He opened the year with a an eight-kilometer personal record of 25:08.0 at the IU Open and later improved that mark to 24:34.5 at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Ferlic closed out the year by running a 10-kilometer personal record of 29:59.61 at the NCAA Midwest Regional – a mark that ranks 11th all-time at the University of Minnesota.
Gophers Add Four to 2018 Cross Country Team
Minnesota will have four new faces on the roster this season as the Gophers have added true freshmen Declan Dahlberg (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) and Khalid Hussein (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) along with redshirt freshman transfer Seth Eliason (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins / Georgetown). Additionally, Dawson LaRance will join Minnesota's cross country squad as a redshirt freshman this season after competing for the Gophers track & field program as a true freshman last season.

The University of Minnesota and Gopher Athletics celebrated a new era of track and field with the grand opening of the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Monday, Sept. 17. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, this facility will become synonymous with track & field excellence in the Midwest. It will not only provide a first-class experience for the Gophers, but it will also provide a wonderful venue for the state's largest amateur meets and a Minnesota option for USA Track & Field to place its marquee events in the Upper Midwest.
The University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium gives Minnesota its first opportunity in more than 15 years to host home outdoor meets, including Big Ten and NCAA competition. The facility features a nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface, full-field event hosting capabilities, versatile configuration, fully enclosed, heated warm-up and cool down areas, and grandstands with the capacity to host major competitions.
